I think it is partly due to the shifting of the Overton Window (seems to be a cool thing to use these days) to the right by the Labor party that is causing this aberrant LNP behaviour. What is seen as politically acceptable has shifted — thanks to main stream media — so far to the right that the right-wing of politics only has far-right policies to differentiate itself from what Labor is driving. This is bunkus of course. To believe that the electorate is too dumb to understand subtle policy differences is a dumbing down of all Australian voters. The Independents’ successes have proven the contrary. I think the true reason for the Libs and Nats going full-on #Fascism has to be manaical thirst for public attention. Even if they do not get into govt, they can bask in an ego-stroking pastiche of power given them by a diminishing minority of electors and have their daily 5 minutes of fame (draw a decent salary to boot) curtesy of the #Grifting #Rich and the insane #megalomania of #Media moguls. The closer to irrelevance the RWNJs are, the more unhinged they get. This can’t last. It won’t last.
