On this day in 2014 we were in #Marrakech. We stayed at a riad in the #Medina and were learning to navigate its labyrinthine alleyways when I came upon the entrance gate to the #BenYoussefLibrary.

Marrakech doesn't ease you in. It takes hold the moment you pass through the medina gates — cumin, rose water, the call to prayer off 900-year-old walls.

The souks still function like they did in the 11th century. The Djemaa el-Fna square reinvents itself every few hours. The tanneries are still worked by hand.

Best time: March–May. Best accommodation: a riad. Best single thing to do: a traditional hammam.
