Another #MediaWiki question:

I am experimenting with the "Random Selection" extension, which calls up some random code or text. The default setting seems to be that it will always call up the same option unless (a) you alter the page this function is on, or (b) the cache is refreshed.

I am thus curious: How often _does_ the cache for pages get refreshed in a MediaWiki wiki by default?

My LocalSettings.php has this line, if this matters:

$wgMainCacheType = CACHE_ACCEL;

Alternatively, this function allows an "uncached" option. But I am worried - does this only apply to this specific function, or to the page as a whole? The former would probably be fine, but I do not want all pages to be uncached, thanks to the massive extra server load.

@firefoxwebdevs I believe this would reach its full potential if supported and implemented also for headers in @mediawiki transcluded pages/templates, and in situations with no front-end JavaScript, for example when computing the heading level inside @11ty includes.

Happy Brooke Vibber day!

Today I am publishing, in full, an interview I did with @bvibber back in 2021 about the history of #Wikipedia and #MediaWiki.

https://blog.legoktm.com/2026/06/01/interview-with-brooke-vibber-2021.html

Topics covered include: aversion to change, BDFLs, #PHP, whether MediaWiki should RIIR, and more!

A few parts of this interview were published in the Signpost at the time, but most didn't make the cut solely for space reasons. So in light of recent events, I was looking back and thought it was still worth publishing.

Interview with Brooke Vibber (2021) - The Lego Mirror

I had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Vibber back in January 2021 for my story in the Wikipedia Signpost, The people who built Wikipedia, technically, which looked back at the technical history of Wikipedia to celebrate the 20th birthday. I was not able to use all of the responses Brooke…

At ECHOLOT, we are trying to learn more about how MediaWiki is used outside of the original projects of the @wikimediafoundation, such as @wikipedia, @wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikidata and Wikifunctions.

Thank you for participating!
