"Curta Mechanical Calculator"

Modelled, textured and rendered in Blender. Initially conceived in Austria in the 1930's by Curt Herzstark, who continued to develop the design even after he was sent to Buchenwald concentration camp. Brought into production in the late 1940's, Curtas, about the size of a small pepper mill that could be easily held in one hand, were considered to be the very best portable calculator until they were gradually displaced by electronic machines in the 1970's.

This little mechanical calculator is one of my favorite objects. It came to me with what turned out to be a fouled 10s pin retaining ring; it was a bear to take apart, ‘machine’ a new part, and reassemble. But it works! And I love it!

@aral One day I'll have to give a talk about the UI of early mechanical calculators contrasted with modern UI design. These calculators were nothing like modern ones, it was basically a direct front-end to the machinery that made the calculations possible. As a result there was about 3 or 4 families of UI, each distinct (because of patents) and each requiring you study a manual to do even simple calculations. #mechanicalcalculators #calculators #ui #mechanicalcomputers

Atlas Obscura on a very nice museum. The Museum ENTER in Switzerland features early radios, calculators, computers and even the Curta.
