🐛 Feasibility of Using Tenebrio molitor Larvae as an Alternative Protein Source

(aka. "we put the meal in mealworms")

@Tarah True story. I've eaten #wichettygrubs, and they taste like scallops (and yes, better broiled than raw or live), and when I've been putting together homemade suet cakes for my feathered friends, I used #mealworms. And you know, they have a very distinctive spicy savory smell when dried. Tempted to try them (but only if I raise and harvest them -- not the bird ones, which might not be fit for human consumption). What I'm trying to say is, don't knock it until you try it (and I thought the same about sushi).

Writer Fuel: Could Mealworms Be a Solution for Plastic Waste?

Scientists may have discovered an unlikely ally in the fight against plastic waste: the lesser mealworm. Native to Africa but now widespread across the planet, a beetle larvae from the Alphitobius genus can consume and degrade plastic, the researchers found. The finding could be particularly useful in combating plastic pollution in Africa, the researchers noted....

Uh, guys, I'm totally ok with the progress in the #food industry and alternative #protein source (crickets are tasty). But I also has been keeping insect-eating animals on a scale (for scientific/rehabilitation reasons) and has been breeding #Tenebrio molitor for several years at home (2-3 40L trays). Half of my colleagues doing the same and I personally have got an allergy for T. molitor. Probably there is something special about #mealworms being #allergenic, as I haven't had any problems breeding locusts and cockroaches before. Human immune system is generally tailored to raise alarm on chitin detection (as it's not naturally produced by our body and finding it there means fungal infection or endo/ecto parasites infestation) and powderized #chitin in the air is a perfect way to get an #allergy. Ofc. it's not that severe with the food, as we can eat mushrooms and prawns (and crickets if you like it) without any problems.
But thanks #Eurocommision now I'm joining the row of the people carefully reading the package in search of the "Produced on the grounds where also XXX is used". And hope workers will also get their appropriate PPE and insurance.

One of the great recycling ♻️ tricks that they used was they had #mealworms 🐛 which eat the parts of the plants 🌱 that they couldn't consume, they would put spice 🌶️ on the mealworms, and they would eat 🍽️ them https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20241206-leave-only-moonprints-nasas-lunar-recycling-ambitions

Leave only moonprints: Nasa's lunar recycling ambitions

When astronauts land on the Moon again as part of the Artemis project, they will have to build a place to live in. Nasa wants them to build as much of it they can from used materials.
