Apple eased guidelines to allow for game emulators to be distributed through their App Store.

The first one I’ve downloaded is the free Delta emulator. It supports a good handful of original Nintendo consoles with more to come. The Verge has a good write up with details.

Loading ROMs is easy. Delta intelligently hides onscreen controls when a Bluetooth controller is present. You can Airplay the game to a screen and it works fairly well. (And yes, Android phones have had these emulators for a while, but it’s nice to have them available on Apple’s store.)

Here’s the thing though, I doubt I’ll spend much time playing any of these old games. I’ve oodles of classics available on the Switch, old consoles that still work in storage boxes and a Raspberry Pi set up specifically for emulation. I love the idea of playing old games, but when it comes down to it? I’d rather be doing something else.

There’s joy in the possibility though, and sometimes that’s nice to have on hand.

Today also included another trip to the hardware store, a cheeseburger and a walk around the park downtown. Caught bees pollenating redbuds. I had some snapshots in focus but I quite liked this one for some reason.

When I was a kid and forced to eat salad I complained unless it was slathered in Thousand Island dressing — no other option was acceptable.

Then there was the ranch phase that started in middle school or so — this lasted a really, really long time.

I dabbled in French for a short while.

Then got into balsamics through my forties.

Now I’ll try anything.

Garlic Expressions entered the scene recently and now I buy it in bulk at Costco and fill in the gaps at Kroger. It’s a simple vinaigrette with garlic chonks and it is perfect (after a vigorous shake).

Today I learned the company makes just this single product and they’re based in Perrysburg, Ohio. If I was a betting person, I’d invest in them.

The big garlic chonks live in the bottle of the bottle for a delightful finish

Something’s up with my left ankle. I had an inkling something was afoot during the latter part of vacation, but it didn’t fully manifest then (thank goodness).

So I’m sorting through the medicine cabinet for temporary relief and realizing, I can’t read the small type on pill bottles… doesn’t matter how close I get.

I have crossed a line — I need at least one pair of readers in every room.

“Your sweat is so shiny and beautiful!” blurts the guide from Nintendo’s Ring Fit Adventure when you finish a level. I was definitely sweating, probably shiny but I’m sure I looked ridiculous.

This game and peripheral came out at the end of 2019 but I was working out with my trainer Larry and we switched to virtual when it became clear the pandemic was sticking around.

I picked a copy on sale in late 2021 and it sat collecting dust until today.

I moved the living room coffee table, slid the left controller into a sleeve that wraps around your leg and snapped the other one in this ring and fired it up.

Between jogging in place, squeezing that ring apparatus to interact with the environment and all the floor exercises, I was downright woozy from a really great workout.

The IR port on the controller even measures your pulse between sets and it‘’s pretty darn accurate with readings on my watch.

So day one with this thing is in the books. I’m hopeful this might get me moving on the cold days!

A few more grabs of bits from the game

I loved everything about ColecoVision (and every console of this era). All the package and identity work was SPOT ON and combined with album cover design inspired my entire livelihood.

Also, DonkeyKong Jr. was among my favorite games. Ever. (I need to add it to the list.)

I mean, look at this logo.

I’ve this harebrained scheme to make a thing and sell it on Amazon with the express purpose to encourage folks to move it to the top of their wishlist. The thumbnail of said product would read “Please use my wishlist to buy from other stores, not this one.”

To be clear, I don’t want to sell the product, I just want it to exist.

I posted about this on alt-X* and think an eBook is a good approach.

Then I got sidetracked by that process and the formatting issues that arise if there are images in said eBook.

I should lower my bar for harebrained schemes but see this as an opportunity to learn along the way.
