-OFC these are renewables and in terms of operation and long-term care there's more than 17t or irradiated material you get from a reactor which too has a finite lifespan, and which requires more than cranes or a heavy duty helicopter to get installed.

A circular economy is a pipedream anyway!

-But at least the energy companies building solar and wind farms don't expect the state to pay for their fuel, logistics and reclaimation effors whilst privatizing profits, because no #nuclear powerplant is #profitable if they have to pay for these things, incl. longterm storage!

Cuz your escalating commitment to 20th century tech is as absurd as people wanting to use CFC-11 as foaming agent and Tetraethyllead as anti-knocking agent in fuel: Yes these things work but society has made the decision that their downsides are not worth it and that the harm outweights the benefits.

• In fact, #Antarctica's #McMurdo Station had a nuclear reactor and instead of having that shit continue contaminating the site (again) they gonna go #Wind because let's face it Antarctica's coastline is basically never windstill and during Winter this is the most reliable, clean and efficient source of energy unless they were allowed to build a geothermal powerplant and contaminate the area with it's tailings and residue cuz geothermally heated water is full of soluble minerals...

@swoop aside from edge-cases like icebreakers and military submarines I sincerely dount that.

• And even those are a problem: Atomflot can only keep itself afloat due to beibg contracted from the west for icebreaking duties and submarines are useless outside of military and scientific nieches.

As shitty as it sounds: $700M will buy you more than 1000 MWe in Wind + 1000MWe Geothermal in a remite region like #McMurdo.

• The only reason they've not done #Geothermal yet is due to #envoirmental studies and the problem of where to dump excess brine from the bore hole…

@swoop That argument is absurd cuz you gonna need the same Niobium for magnets whether you have a wind or steam turbine!

• Besides that's rather an argument towards me saying it's a waste of rare heaby metals (Uranium) to waste them for boiling water.

The Arcitc can be served with renewables like #Wind pretty reliable.

• In fact #McMurdo in #Antarctica is moving towards #Renewables because they tried #nuclear and all it did was irradiate water that leaked.
