Howdy, fuckos!

Past November something memetic happened at mastodon.uy: everyone suddenly started talking about washers (#arandelas in Rioplatense Spanish) found on the street. Mostly the instance owner, but then regular users, later those of other instances chimed in, and soon we were talking about washer-themed merch, using them as the basis of a new currency, seeing a washer in any random object, and probably worshipping them.

Because I'm well past the age of stooping and picking up shit from the sidewalk (fuck me, who's gonna believe that?), I'll bring here a little story from this show I like, For All Mankind, wherein a washer saves the day. The night. Whatever.

There's this big office building in Moscow where a Yankee exile is working late into the night. She goes down from her office into the cafeteria to grab a coffee from the machine.

She walks past another woman, clearly less well-placed into the organization, who's working too. She checks prices. Looks at the coins in her hand. Not enough change. Starts back up, very annoyed.

The woman rises from her chair, walks up to her, asks her for one of the coins. She turns over another chair, uses the coin as a screwdriver to liberate a washer, gives back washer and coin to the exile, who says tentatively:

"Same diameter and weight...?"

The woman sets the chair on her legs. Our exile concludes:

"Clever."

"If only the coffee were worth the effort."

After a back-and-forth of no consequence for us, our exile inquires why the woman helped her after weeks of getting the cold shoulder from everybody, to which she says:

"A woman without coffee is a dangerous woman."

Chuckles. End of the scene.

Those who know who the exile was, what she did in the past and what was she going to accomplish in the future will agree with me: on a humble washer did turn the world that night.
