Well this was weird, but I think I fixed it. When I manually updated OpenSSL to the latest version, somehow the ssl/certs directory was empty, so all the openssl calls failed. When I copied across all the files from the previous ssl/certs directory, things started working again.
As evidence of this working, here is my cat helping me fix this problem 😹

biggest #MastodonUpgrade coming to #search is one that takes aim directly at Xitter & competitors: at last, the ability to search for posts. Before, Mastodon content search relied on hashtags.
You can also now use #searchoperators to narrow down your search results, such as only retrieving posts that have an embedded link or a poll, or limiting results to those from a specific user, or posts that were published between specific dates."

love @IceCubesApp, but definitely agree. It becomes cumbersome to always type out the #Hashtags, with capitals instead of accepting lowercase suggestions.
As there is much push for ALT text, as much value is in #CamelCaps (as I know them), because they are read the correct way by #ScreenReaders…
(and this post demonstrates, how I like to utilize hashtags… ;-)
Got a notification from some mastodon bot account about needing to upgrade.
Gave it a shot but the result was server down for 3 days and when it finally came back up, same version.
