To celebrate I am getting ready to help host and chair the first #SocialBC and Society of Open Social Servers of BC Annual General Meeting tomorrow with @arbutus and @jrenken

If you are in BC and would like to help grow a #regional instance come on over! There is no requirement to be part
of the Society but any SocialBC account holder
can be at the AGM and anyone who has donated at least $20 in the past year is a full member and can vote and volunteer for the Board!

#mastodonniversary 🥳🥳— It's my 3rd (ALREADY!?) birthday of joining Mastodon!

To celebrate, I'm officially starting to post at a new 2nd account @chris at the brand new SocialBC instance!! 🎉🎉.

I will continue posting here but I'll do instance related posts from https://socialbc.ca/@chris as we get up and running and closer to welcoming registrations, plus BC specific stuff.

Well, I have been using Mastodon on Bitbang for a year now. Some things I can say with certainty:
1) I consistently feel like I'm in a community that is supportive, creative, and kind.
2) In every sense of the word, I feel safer here than on any social platform.
Here's to the fediverse, created in the distributed spirit of the old internet.🦣

In honour of my first year #mastodonniversary I thought it was a good time to change the profile pic. I'll pin this post as a description for the image. Enough with the sub-pic mocking checkmark 😆. Here is real me, a couple years ago on a rainy day kayaking in the Nanaimo River. We were camping on Labour Day weekend at a great new-to-us campground right on the river (Living Forest Campground, in South Nanaimo). First time I had kayaked in years. It is a selfie, my face is in the bottom right corner. I have a rain jacket hood on, I am smiling. Behind me is flat water thanks to the rain, you can see raindrops on the surface, a shoreline is visible with trees on both sides of the river. It narrows further behind me. Wow. It's official. It has been a year since I discovered #Mastodon and the #fediverse. I still have a bit of that 1990s web feeling of pure, self directed, discovery. It is why this place is conpelling. I am also so grateful for having connected with such a great group of new friends.

This year I *will* convince more people to come here and stay and I will build places for people to do that. Plans are already in the works. I want my real life community in #PortAlberni and #VancouverIsland and #BC to discover this place. I want it to be the place for immediate news to appear on, for government orgs to post updates, for people to rely on.

The #OpenSocialWeb with #ActivityPub is the future of social interaction. Billionaires have had their time. It's our time now.

And unlike the for-profit options Liberapay is not hounding creators or patrons with endless notifications, new features, and all the nonsense that make every single thing we do a hassle. It's my one month Mastodonniversary! In that short time the platform has increased over 500% in monthly active users (from 360K to 2.2M). At this rate we'll have all 8 billion monthly active users on here by April. We'll also have some very stressed Admins. ❤️🐘
