I get the behavior, it probably just needs some cross linking in the docs, and quite probably has assistive help text on the settings pages themselves.
Yes, yes, I know, “PR's welcome”.
Will I? Of course not, now that I'm initiated into the gnostic confusion.
I should have known that as soon as I wrote “I really don't want to look at code and issues" that of course I was going to start looking at code and issues
At least I'm not alone, here's a 6-year old issue talking about the confusion (in the opposite direction) https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8470
The code clearly sets this in code that's moved around - 8 years ago: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/commit/347a153b3dc73068aedf7510c395cc350a553629
Unfortunately I wish the docs on "locked accounts" doesn't mention it:
I saw someone (possibly Gargron?) saying that at the moment people are locking their accounts and then getting totally thrown when their posts are still completely public and ending up on the publi...
(dupe, public)

While confusing, I do get the logic of it with limited UI options and having it be a default with that follower privacy. But it's still confusing because of the direct contradiction with the posting privacy setting.
I really don't want to look at code and issues this morning, (and it might be documented, but I didn't find it in speed reading) so I apologize for what might be a #lazyweb question
I just want to know if this is a known thing and I'm not alone
Hey #mastodonhelpers - there is a pretty confusing UI issue to me in Mastodon - and I'd like some confirmation that I'm not missing something.
When I set up this personal instance - I intentionally unchecked “Automatically accept new followers” for my account, I just wanted a little bit of time+space to report/block spam accounts.
What that is unchecked, despite having the “Posting privacy” default set to “Public" it defaults my posts to “Followers Only”
I find this confusing... (..1/2..)
@textasfeelings heya! The first place to start is to follow @feditips if you haven't already! They've got a lot of resources to help you find your way around.
The first thing I would do is make an #introduction post (and make sure to use that hash tag). Tell people a little bit about who you are, and use hashtags when you talk about your interests. That will help other people who are interested in those things find you more easily. Also, as you post about things, use hashtags to help others find your toots by search.
You can also follow hashtags to get more content in your home timeline. I did the following things when I first started here:
get to know the people on your local instance and follow them. The more people you follow, the more content you'll see in your home timeline, and the more topics and people you'll discover to interact with.
follow hashtags (e.g. #boardgames, #martialarts, and #cyberpunk are some of the ones I follow)
interact with other people's toots; comment on them, like them, and boost them if you really like it! Interacting with people is the best way to find others.
cruise the federated timeline to see a bunch more posts from everywhere (the "firehose") to maybe give you more people to follow and interact with
Hope this helps!
