Die Kohlschnake gehört zu den Mücken und kommt auf Kulturfeldern (v.a. Kartoffeln und Rüben), in Wassernähe und in feuchten Regionen vor. Sie ernährt sich von Nektar, Laub und Pflanzenwurzeln.
