This is a Mariposa lily (Calochortus venustus) I encountered in my hike yesterday in Mount Madonna Park, between Gilroy and Watsonville in the Santa Cruz mountains of North Central California. #wildflowers #photography #mariposalily . The common name is actually "butterfly Mariposa lily" which seems horribly redundant, but it is to distinguish them from their cousins.

Whenever I’m in the West I love finding mariposa lilies. This is a desert mariposa lily, Calochortus kennedyi.

Spotted this mariposa lily today. There was just a single, solitary bloom and no foliage so it stood out amid all the other sagebrush type plants in the area.

I think it’s a Sego lily which is native to this region.
