#Seaturtle boom may be hiding a population collapse
#Globalwarming causes temperatures to rise, more sea #turtle eggs are developing into females. As in some other #reptiles turtle’s sex is dependent on incubation temperature. Without enough males, even a seemingly thriving population can collapse.
Conservation efforts, #marineprotectedareas, fishing regulations and protecting egg clutches, are helping populations, but may not provide full picture.

A sea turtle boom may be hiding a population collapse

In Cape Verde, conservation has boosted the sea turtle population 100-fold — but the male-female balance is way off.

U.S. President Donald Trump has moved to reopen the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument to commercial fishing, arguing it won’t harm marine species and will support the industry.

Conservationists say the protected area is a vital sanctuary — and warn of wider rollbacks affecting other U.S. marine monuments.

Trump opens only US marine national monument in Atlantic to fishing — again

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on Feb. 6 to open a marine protected area off the northeastern U.S. to commercial fishing, in his latest move to deregulate the country’s waters and fisheries. The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, a 12,725-square-kilometer (4,913-square-mile) area roughly 209 km (130 mi) southeast of Cape Cod, […]

In Baja California, Mexico, fishing communities organized in cooperatives have established voluntary #marineprotectedareas, kelp forest monitoring and #restoration projects to protect and recover their kelp forests following collapse from extreme hypoxia and marine heatwaves

Nearly 200 nations pledged in 2022 to protect 30% of Earth by 2030. By 2025, 9.6% of the ocean is covered by marine protected areas, up from 8.4% in 2024.

But only 3.2% are highly or fully protected—raising concerns about “paper parks” that still allow destructive activities.

Mongabay chronicled some of the progress made toward protecting the oceans in 2025 in this list compiled by Shanna Hanbury.

Marine protected areas expanded in 2025, but still far from 30% goal

In December 2022, nearly 200 nations committed to protecting 30% of Earth’s lands and waters by 2030. As of 2025, about 9.6% of the world’s oceans are now covered by marine protected areas, according to the latest global tracking data by the World Database on Protected Areas. This marks a 1.2% increase in 2025, up […]

#Spain announced the designation of five new #MarineProtectedAreas (MPAs) https://oceanographicmagazine.com/news/conservation-win-for-spain-as-six-marine-protected-areas-declared/

"The decision adds 17,000 km² of marine space to the country’s protected waters. The newly protected sites include some of the most biologically rich and ecologically significant areas in Spanish waters: the #seamounts of the Mallorca Channel, the pockmark fields and seamounts of the Seco de Palos, the Capbreton canyon system, the Alboran Sea banks, and the Central Catalan Coast."

To help ecosystems, there are two common practices:
☝️Protect from disturbance (e,g., Marine Protected Areas #marineprotectedareas)
✌️Restoration

The problems:
1. We cannot strictly protect everywhere. It is simply not feasible.
2. We cannot realistically restore everywhere.
