I like learning the context around some of these tiny, one-line toots about history.

Today in 1964, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz became president of Mexico.

His term from 1964-1970 came in the middle of the "Mexican Miracle" marked by rapid economic growth, low inflation, and big state-led industrial projects.

This growth was entirely on the backs of the workers. Cheap labor. Controlled Unions. State violence.

Starting with the 1964-65 doctors' movement where he threatened prosecution for "homicide by negligence" and allowed beatings and arrests of leaders until the strike collapsed.

1968 was his denouement with the Tlatelolco Massacre. A peaceful student protest turned into a blood bath with possibly hundreds dead and over a thousand arrested and the violence triggered by government snipers.
