In the 1940s, around 30 million cases of Malaria were reported annually in China. Given the country's long history of combating malaria, many scientists under Project 523 - initiated by Mao Zedong on May 23, 1967 - were dedicated to studying and testing ancient remedies to help develop a new, more effective treatment. Project chief Tu Youyou and her team found a reference from ~400 AD to sweet wormwood, a common plant native to Asia. The rest is history!
