Ancient TP etymon

kapesi brown, grey

My work hypothesis was kapesi 'brown, grey' < maybe from Georgian კაფეში /k’apeshi/ 'in the café'

but via Facebook I've gotten a better etymology :

Zev Brook A case-inflected Georgian word is a big jump, and the semantics are pretty far off as well. What comes to mind for me is Mandarin 咖啡色 (kāfēisè), which means "the colour of coffee". (This Toki Pona word is obsolete, but of current Toki Pona words, Wikipedia quotes 8% of Chinese origin.) I won't hock Sonja by tagging her, but if she sees this post, perhaps she'll

It is in this way that I expressed my gratitude :

Pite Janseke Thanks alot ! the Cantonese pronunciation (Jyutping): gaa3 fe1 sik1 is even closer to kapesi and its tokiponization would end up as kapesi anyway ! - https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%92%96%E5%95%A1%E8%89%B2 (Toki Pona borrows words from Cantonese as wel as Mandarin)

Sentence structures
A sentence may be an interjection, statement, wish/command, or question.
Some interjections are a, ala, ike, jaki, mu, o, pakala, pona, toki, etc. and can stand alone as a sentence.
Statements follow the normal structure of subject predicate with an optional la phrase at the beginning. The word li always comes before the predicate unless the subject is mi or sina by itself. The direct object marker e comes before the direct objects. More li and e markers can introduce new predicates or direct objects.Vocative phrases come before the main sentence and are marked with o at the end of the phrase, after the addressee.
In commands, the word o comes before a verb to express a second person command. It can also replace li, or come after the subjects mi or sina, to express wishes.
There are two ways to form yes-no questions in Toki Pona. The first method is to use the "verb ala verb" construction in which ala comes in between a duplicated verb, auxiliary verb, or other predicators. Another way to form a yes-no question is to put "anu seme?" (lit. or what?) at the end of a sentence. It is important to note that questions cannot be made by just putting a question mark at the end of a sentence.
Non-polar questions are formed by substituting the unknown information with the interrogative word seme.

Phonology

Toki Pona is phonetically minimal. Its system resembles that of Japanese but lacks distinctive voicing, geminate consonants, long vowels, and clusters of palatal consonants. (This is not how the syllables are presented in the official lessons, but it shows the parallels to better-known CV(n) languages.) It also lacks diphthongs.

[...]

Within a word, syllable-final n cannot precede a nasal consonant (n or m), and a syllable without an initial consonant can only appear as the first syllable of a word. Sandhi effects change the pronunciation of np (but not its spelling) to [mp] or [mb].
Generally, words are accented on the first syllable.
Note that 'ju', though valid, is not in the official wordlist.

Roots

Two words have archaic synonyms: nena replaced kapa (protuberance) early in the language's development for unknown reasons. Later, the pronoun ona replaced iki (he, she, it, they), which was sometimes confused with ike (bad).[12] Similarly, ali was added as an alternative to ale (all) to avoid confusion with ala (no, not) among people who reduce unstressed vowels, though both forms are still used.

Words that have been simply removed from the lexicon, without being replaced, include leko (block, stairs), kan (with), and pata (sibling, cousin).

Besides ali, nena, and ona, which replaced existing roots, two roots were added to the original 118: pan for cereals (grain, bread, pasta, rice, etc.) and esun for places of commerce (market, shop, etc.).
