Magma ocean (Planetary science 🪐)

Magma oceans are vast fields of surface magma that exist during periods of a planet's or some natural satellite's accretion when the celestial body is completely or partly molten. In the early Solar System, magma oceans were formed by the melting of planetesimals and planetary impacts. Small planetesimals are melted by ...

Comparing Two Proposed NASA Missions to Jupiter's Moon Io

It's time for a mission to Jupiter's volcanic moon Io. A new proposal outlines what we can learn and how we can learn it.

NASA's Juno Probe Makes Another Close Flyby of Io

The Juno spacecraft has revealed some fascinating things about Jupiter since it began exploring the system on July 4th, 2016. Not only is it the first robotic mission to study Jupiter up close while orbiting it since the Galileo spacecraft, which studied the gas giant and its satellites from 1995 to 2003. Juno is also … Continue reading "NASA’s Juno Probe Makes Another Close Flyby of Io"

Congratulations to Dr. Keavin Moore, who successfully defended his PhD thesis, "Coupled Models of Water on Terrestrial Planets Orbiting M-Dwarfs"
(supervised by Nic Cowan)

Keavin's models predict that water dissolved in a magma ocean, combined with recycling hydrated crust back into the mantle, can both limit water loss during the early active phase of a red dwarf star.

Mysteries of Earth: Researchers predict how fast ancient magma ocean solidified

Early in the formation of Earth, an ocean of magma covered the planet's surface and stretched thousands of miles deep into its core. The rate at which that "magma ocean" cooled affected the formation of the distinct layering within the planet and the chemical makeup of those layers.
