Im Saarland ist der 8. Juni - der Tag der Maggi-Erfindung - kein kulinarischer Nationalfeiertag. Er könnte es aber sein.
Ein Saarländer verbraucht im Schnitt rund einen Liter Maggi pro Jahr – das ist ein Vielfaches des deutschen Bundesdurchschnitts.
Während man Maggi andernorts vielleicht mal in die Suppe tröpfelt, kommt es im Saarland fast überall dran. Es gibt sogar saarländische Nationalgerichte, bei denen die Würze die Hauptrolle spielt. Auch in der traditionellen Festtagssuppe oder im saarländischen Lyoner-Salat darf die Flasche niemals fehlen.
Die Flasche steht im Saarland in fast jedem Haushalt und in traditionellen Gasthäusern wie selbstverständlich neben Salz und Pfeffer auf dem Tisch. Es ist schlicht der Geschmack der Heimat.

I learned to appreciate it here in Hong Kong, and assumed it was Indonesian or something.
Now it's disappearing from supermarket shelves, no idea why, and I haven't found a good replacement. Del Monte's garlic chili tomato sauce is the least disappointing substitute so far.

La mole delle responsabilità che ci riguardano quando accompagniamo gli studenti in gita è insostenibile. Dovremmo boicottare le visite d’istruzione, almeno finché il legislatore non alleggerirà le responsabilità nei nostri confronti”. All’indomani della morte del 18enne precipitato dal balcone di un hotel durante un viaggio d’istruzione a Lignano Sabbiadoro, Andrea Maggi professore e docente anche de Il Collegio su Rai 2, interviene su Facebook con una netta presa di posizione. L’obiettivo del suo post è accendere i riflettori sulle dirette conseguenze legali che gravano sul personale scolastico in caso di incidenti.
Riferendosi alla tragedia appena avvenuta, Maggi analizza l’iter che attende i professori in servizio: “Al di là del grido disperato sul malessere giovanile, si apre da adesso, con le indagini della Procura, l’incubo dei suoi docenti accompagnatori”. Il professore evidenzia poi una disparità di trattamento legale che penalizzerebbe la sua categoria rispetto al resto della pubblica amministrazione: “Noi insegnanti non siamo impiegati pubblici qualunque. Noi, a differenza di tutti gli altri, siamo colpevoli fino a prova contraria”.
Maggi riconosce che “la visita di istruzione è un momento importante dell’esperienza scolastica di ogni studente”, ma ribadisce che i docenti devono essere messi nelle condizioni di poter lavorare serenamente. A chiudere il post è un’analisi delle attuali condizioni contrattuali e dei rischi connessi alla vigilanza dei minori in trasferta: “Dovremmo pretendere delle garanzie che non abbiamo, senza le quali nessun altro lavoratore di nessun’altra categoria sarebbe mai disposto a fare degli straordinari gratis, accollandosi per di più responsabilità civili e penali gigantesche”.
