The low winter sun shone through this moss growing on a tree trunk lying across a forest stream. Walking through the forest on ice in the footsteps of animals and stretching under snow-covered tree trunks is fun. The furry neighbors who walked before me have a lower profile. It's really cold, but the sun is bright. It wouldn't be possible to take this photo at any other time of year.

Creeping moss, Brachythecia, climbs up tree trunks in the forest. In this area, it grows up to a meter high when the trunk is vertical. The more the trunk is inclined, the more rain falls on it and the moss can grow higher. And it retains water. I saw a tree trunk covered with moss ten meters high. The tiny black balls on the tree bark are organisms that I have not been able to identify.

I am fascinated by these colors. Among the yellow lichen Polycaulonia polycarpa and gray-green lichen Physcia dubia probably, you can see the tiny pink fungus Illosporiopsis christiansenii, which parasitizes the lichen. I photographed all this on a blackthorn tree (Prunus spinosa) while tasting the blue fruits, which were now frozen and therefore sweet.

Nature can be found even in cities, though it is often inconspicuous and hidden. We associate ferns with forests, moisture, and shade. But this miniature fern, Asplenium ruta-muraria, commonly grows in the city where I live, in the cracks of stone walls. It doesn't mind dry conditions. It is actually almost everywhere, just very inconspicuous.

I like this type of moss, Hypnum cupressiforme, whose ends look twisted like unfolding ferns. Snow and lower temperatures don't seem to bother the moss at all.

The leaves of this succulent plant resemble inflatable balloons. This is a big difference from moss, which has leaves that are only one cell thick. Yet both plants are able to withstand drought well. Sedum, however, is a plant of dry places and stores water in its leaves. I took photos in the courtyard of the Seon Mun Sa Zen Center.
