Journalist Bill Moyers died this week at the age of 91. Before his journalism career he worked for Lyndon Johnson and became his press secretary at age 31.
Moyers was the last surviving individual to have witnessed the swearing in of LBJ on Air Force One after President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.
The arrow points to Moyers in back.

#BillMoyers, who served as #press secy to President #LyndonJohnson & then, for >40 years, as a broadcast #journalist known for bringing ideas—both timely & timeless—to TV, died June 26 at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 91.

The cause was complications from prostate #cancer, said his son, William Cope Moyers.
Long before he became a grandee of #PublicTelevision, the #Texas-born Moyers was a top aide &, by many accounts, a surrogate son to Johnson.

The Zhi Zhu post (attached) is one of the most important messages of the past week. Franklin Roosevelt saw the Hitler threat long before the American public did. FDR needed to do the groundwork for American intervention, which, by the way, started long before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. US history is filled with major examples. Right now, according to public opinion polling, the American public is not with us on Gaza. We need Capitol Hill "leadership" to lead on this issue and many others and we positively are not getting it. It has been altogether too convenient to just slide along while Bernie Sanders says what needs to be said. Young or not so young, we need a new group of Democratic politicians who do not leave their spines at home.

‘The universities are the enemy’: why the right detests the American campus

For centuries, the academy was exclusive to the Christian elite. When that began to change, an onslaught began

Thank you #HeatherCoxRichardson for putting things into perspective...
" On August 6th, Dr. King and Mrs. Boynton were guests of honor as President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Recalling the outrage of Selma, Johnson said, this right to vote is the basic right without which all others are meaningless. It gives people, people as individuals, control over their own destinies."
Let's not forget that of all the rights Americans enjoy, the #RightToVote is the most consequential!

Another thing the thank Jimmy Carter for, revival of religious fundamentalism in politics:

.> One must not forget that this country was founded by religious fanatics. Since Jimmy Carter, religious fundamentalists play a major role in elections. He was the first president who made a point of exhibiting himself as a born again Christian. That sparked a little light in the minds of political campaign managers: Pretend to be a religious fanatic and you can pick up a third of the vote right away. Nobody asked whether Lyndon Johnson went to church every day. Bill Clinton is probably about as religious as I am, meaning zero, but his managers made a point of making sure that every Sunday morning he was in the Baptist church singing hymns.

.> Chomsky: Let us look at the “differences” more closely, and we recognize how limited and cynical they are. The hawks say, if we continue we can win. The doves say, it is costing us too much. But try to find an American politician who says frankly that this aggression is a crime: the issue is not whether we win or not, whether it is expensive or not. Remember the Russian invasion of Afghanistan? Did we have a debate whether the Russians can win the war or whether it is too expensive? This may have been the debate at the Kremlin, or in Pravda. But this is the kind of debate you would expect in a totalitarian society. If General Petraeus could achieve in Iraq what Putin achieved in Chechnya, he would be crowned king. The key question here is whether we apply the same standards to ourselves that we apply to others.
