Today we had our spring meeting in our COMPUTE research school at #LundUniversity and the theme was software development.

I organized a session on threat assessment regarding our dependence on US software.

The main threats:
-Access to (commercial) software being restricted in the EU due to tariff wars or GDPR noncompliance
-Access to research software produced by US national labs being restricted to hurt the EU
-Development, Maintenance and Distribution of Research software from National Labs being stopped due to funding cuts.

The image shows where we see the threats. Black in a Box is a problem. Blue are alternatives.

BLAS and LAPACK are not issues, they are too widespread and important. But otherwise, it is pretty bleak. Outlook is a problem, as is the fact that most of the Julia eco system is US based. Who will maintain SUNDIALS when funding is cut?

We need a stronger european software ecosystem!

In autumn 2023, two new master programs started at the faculty of science at #LundUniversity namely Computational Science (strong math background) and Applied Computational Science (weak math background). The students are now working on their master thesis and recently, we had a full day where all reported on their progress. To formulate the goal of the program succinctly, it is to have the students learn state of the art techniques for modelling and simuation and apply these to interesting problems. And, what can I say, the concept really works. It was a joy to see.

Here are some of the applications they are working on:
Paper production
Cooling of data centers
Cancer detection
Effect of microparticles on pregnant women
Tree ring series
Tree modelling in climate simulations
4D X-Ray
Peptides in Pharmacology
Room acoustics

And the methods are extremely varied as well. From numerical solvers for partial differential equations, to numerical solvers for neural networks, to purely data driven neural network approaches, and from differential equation based modelling to pure data analysis.

The advisors come from all institutions of the faculty of science, and from local companies.

Get #Fedihired to become a PostDoc in my group at #LundUniversity! This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of two years.

The research group on Scientific Computing for a Sustainable World works on designing and analyzing numerical methods for the simulation of fluid flows and their interaction with surrounding media. These methods are then used to help design wind turbines, to understand turbulent combustion in jet engines that run on renewable fuel, and to improve climate simulations and weather predictions. The group is active in the national strategic research areas eSSENCE and MERGE and collaborates with the Swedish meteorological and hydrological institute (SMHI) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

You will work on methods for interface coupled problems, in particular, but not limited to, the interaction of oceans with sea ice and the atmosphere. We intend to continue our work on the analysis and design of fast iterative coupling methods, based on a domain decomposition approach.

The position includes 20% teaching, such as lectures in existing courses and supervision of Bachelors and Masters Thesis.

🇸🇪 Swedes might snub American products, but will they survive without #Netflix and McDonald's? 🍔📺 Meanwhile, Lund University distracts us with a saga of student services and alumni shenanigans. 🤔🎓

A majority of Swedes are open to boycotting American products

Lund University. A study conducted by brand researchers at Lund University in Sweden, in cooperation with Norstat Sweden, shows that virtually all Swedish consumers have bought or used one of the 21 examined American brands over the past 12 months. The majority of those questioned are open to switching these out for other alternatives. Almost 20 per cent say that they have already boycotted an American brand.
