'Life is possible again’ - #GogolBordello
Gogol Bordello’s new #album is out this month and they are playing in Toronto tonight. Tomorrow Feb 21st they will be in Detroit, #Michigan.
"Gogol Bordello is the band that only gets better with time. Their old stuff is great, but their new stuff is awesome”
“Gogol Bordello is an American #punk #rock band from the #LowerEastSide of Manhattan.”

“I have to tell you,” #BillAron told me as he walked around The World In Front of Me, a retrospective of his #photography at the #American #Jewish Historical Society, “my photography allowed me to walk into rooms I might never have otherwise walked into.”
We had just looked at some of his work documenting #Jews on the #LowerEastSide of #Manhattan in the 1970s and ’80s: a #sofer bent over a #Torah scroll, a glowering #rabbi with imposing eyebrows, a #Hasidic wedding in the #Bobover movement. Each #photo begat the next; when he showed a reticent subject the results of his #film, they would invite him back to take more.
Aron has become known for his work documenting Jewish communities around the world — his first book, From the Corners of the Earth, shows Jewish life in #NewYork, #LosAngeles, #Cuba and the then-#Soviet Union. His next, Shalom Y’all, was the result of a decade spent in the lesser-known Jewish communities of the American #South.
His images are joyous..."

#NewYork - Warm Places for the Cold – #NewYorkCity
The Department of Homeless Services has a policy called “Code Blue” for winter nights when the temperature drops to 32 degrees or below, including wind-chill, between 4:00 PM and 8:00 AM.
What Changes When #CodeBlue is in Effect?
On these nights, Department of Homeless Services policies are relaxed to ensure everyone is warm and safe. This includes:
- Drop-in centers are required to take as many clients as possible, within the Department of Buildings restrictions.
- Anyone in need of a place to go can walk into single adult or family shelters, without undergoing typical intake and eligibility procedures, for the night in question.
- Clients can access any shelter, not just their assigned shelter, for the night in question.
- More outreach teams will be on the streets to offer services and shelter.
- No shelter suspensions or sanctions can be carried out on these dates. Clients who have been sanctioned can return to the shelter for the night in question, if necessary."

In those 1940s tax photos they stopped to try and centre the shot on every single address so you can often get many views of the same spot angled and lit differently. This is roughly around the same spot as the Blanks' store on E 2nd St but also Evenchick's shop at 188 E 2nd and possibly another one. By 1940 the founder Israel Evenchick had passed away and his sons were running it, but Shimele Blank was still alive & presumably running his shop.
"Filling in the Blanks" on my Progressive Musical Benevolent Society research about the Blanks/Blankleders family of musicians. There were about 10 of them in the P.M.B.S., most related to Shimele Blank AKA Yankel Blankleder, a klezmer violinist who owned this music shop at 190 East 2nd Street.
"In his book The Heebie-Jeebies at #CBGB’s: A Secret History of #Jewish #Punk, Steven Beeber chronicles the Jewish lineage that led to #NewYork #punkrock. It goes from #LennyBruce, “the patron saint of punk,” to #LouReed, to #JonathanRichman, to #Suicide, to #RichardHell to Joey and Tommy #Ramone. “As it originated in #Manhattan’s #LowerEastSide in the early 1970s,” Beeber writes, “punk rock was the apotheosis of a Jewish cultural tradition that found its ultimate expression in the generation born after the #Holocaust.”
It’s a fascinating read, and one that had a parallel in #WashingtonDC #SethHurwitz, the founder of the #930Club in #Washington, is a local legend. He grew up in #Potomac, #Maryland, the same suburb I did."
