The quote featured here was said by Riel shortly before his execution, when a guard asked for a souvenir.

"Riel "said 'one day this country will recognize me for the good I've done.' That day is here by you coming here personally," Chartrand said from the podium, speaking directly to Carney. "

Today is the 140th anniversary of #louisriel 's execution.
Riel, now known as the #fatherofmanitoba and a fearless leader of the #metis people, grew up in a well respected home. Like many before him and after, he stepped out of comfort in the name of justice for his people.
He endured being called a lunatic, a traitor, and a criminal , as he was aware that his actions would echo through the centuries. He knew his life would be short.
As a Metis, I honour him.
Execution of Louis Riel (Nov 16, 1885)
Following his surrender, Louis Riel was tried for treason in Regina, found guilty, and executed on November 16, 1885. His death ignited national debate — respect in Québec, outrage among Métis and Indigenous peoples — and remains a defining moment in Canadian identity. #NorthWestRebellion #LouisRiel #Canada #Regina #Colonization
