I just tested the IceWM 4.0 update on Chimera. I have a fondness for IceWM as it was the first WM I ran on my work computer in my first job out of university. Great to see it still seeing new releases. Here it is running on my little loongarch64 box.

MOREFINE M700S Mini PC Ever the fan of an underdog, I recently acquired a new mini-PC with a Loongson 3A6000 CPU. This CPU uses the LoongArch64 instruction set architecture (ISA). loongarch64 is a 64-bit RISC ISA inspired by MIPS and RISC-V introduced by Loongson Technology in 2021. From Wikipedia: A Loongson developer described it as “…a new RISC ISA, which is a bit like MIPS or RISC-V. LoongArch includes a reduced 32-bit version (LA32R), a standard 32-bit version (LA32S) and a 64-bit version (LA64)”.31 The stated rationale was to make Loongson and China not dependent on foreign technology or authorisation to develop their processor capability, whilst not infringing on any technology patents.32

Ok now that's cool looks like Asus finally puts out Firmware updates for their released #Loongson #LoongArch motherboards public.

I've had no luck with any of the Wayland desktops I've tried on this loongarch machine. All fail to start with one error or another related to graphics. X11 XFCE session seems to be working ok though.

Performance is not amazing but seems decent. E.g. browsing the modern web seems fine, including JS heavy sites like Mastodon and Mattermost. Speedometer result and allsorts build time for reference.

I got Chimera installed on the loongarch mini-PC. Installation was very smooth, basically identical to an x86_64 install. I also installed GNOME, but gnome-shell is unstable. I can log in and poke around for a brief amount of time, but then it crashes and I'm back at the login screen. Looks like I have my first project there.

Well it works, but there is a snag. It seems the fan runs full speed the whole time, and it _does not_ sound good.

Aside from that, it ships with Loongnix, a dedicated Linux distro running KDE 5. I can't seem to access the pkg servers, so haven't been able to add fastfetch or anything like that.

Seems to pull a bit under 30W when idle.

Weird new computer arrived. While it looks like a regular mini-PC it has a Loongson 3A6000 CPU with 4 cores, 8 threads and a MIPS derived instruction set architecture (ISA). The aim is to install Chimera Linux on it, and have it be a test bed for building packages, and testing software compatibility. Depending on power consumption I might give it some server duties too.
