Late Afternoon Walk in Montgomery Arboretum of Native Flora
One mild October afternoon, Bhavna and I decided to spend a quiet evening outdoors, soaking up the last bit of warmth in the sun. We parked at Montgomery Veterans Park, near the Harlingen Road Fields. After a short walk to the Pike Run bridge, we crossed into the Montgomery Arboretum of Native Flora. This is the #GreatPlane #tree at #MottisfontAbbey in #Hampshire, and apparently the largest specimen of #LondonPlane tree in Britain. The actual date of its planting is not known for sure but is probably early 18th century, and it now has a trunk diameter of over a dozen metres.
It's #NationalTreeWeek. How well do you notice trees?
Here's my favourite that I run past every day in the local park. Just an ordinary looking tree, right? Wrong!
This #LondonPlane is beautiful close up. See how the deeply-grooved, thick, gnarled dead #bark peels to reveal a wondrous mosaic of yellows, greens and pinkish-grey-brown of live bark underneath. These photos are all of the same trunk, taken at eye level.
Next time you pass a tree, take a closer look. #nature #tree #autumn
@abugblog Great use of an old collective noun. How beautiful.
