Some other recent liverwort photos. I visited the livewort patch I mentioned earlier three times, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get photos I was entirely happy with. I could not find the compositions I was looking for. The sun didn't illuminate the flowers the way I hoped it would either. Alright, can't win every time, maybe next year.

Hepatica (Anemone) americana

Hepaticas are pollinated by small bees and Syrphids (Hoverflies).

The seeds have a fleshy appendage called an elaiosome which attracts ants, who then carry off the seeds, eat the elaiosome and by discarding the rest, plant the seeds for new generations of Hepaticas. .

I heard several robins singing near each other in the woods yesterday. So I decided to look for them today but they seemed to suffer from "stage fright". I heard nothing and could not find the birds. Oh well... How about wood anemones then? Let's see, maybe in a week or so.

Then I remembered seeing liverworts in another forest last year and decided to head there. Fortunately they were in bloom. I found this flower next to a single wood anemone that had taken a head start. I don't think I have ever seen them next to each other before.

The first ones are blooming by my front steps. For a few weeks now, more and more will come out, in every shade from near white to deep purple via pink, blue and lilac. Calcifuge plants, they like my garden and woodland, but they're absolutely nuts at an old lime quarry in the vicinity. Time for the yearly trip there!

For me, the first signs of spring are liverwort flowers.

The liverwort in the greenhouse is very happy these days. (It put itself there, we’re not growing it intentionally)
Lots of Gemmae in the Gemma cups ready to spread.
