Earthquake Report: M 7.4 Earthquake in Taiwan - Jay Patton online

Just as my workday was wrapping up, I got my notification of an earthquake in Taiwan and, shortly thereafter, a call from my boss. There was a possibility of a tsunami, so I stay tuned in the case that I needed to support my work at the California Geological Survey. However, based on the magnitude

Images of tilted buildings near the epicenter of today’s M7.4 earthquake in Taiwan suggest liquefaction may be an important factor, as was also indicated in the NEIC maps of ground failure prediction.

Liquefaction and Sea-Level Rise | U.S. Geological Survey

USGS scientists published a storymap explaining the impacts of sea-level rise on liquefaction severity around the San Francisco Bay Area, California for the magnitude 7.0 ‘HayWired’ earthquake scenario along the Hayward Fault.

The one important fact not mentioned in The New York Times article about the Taylor Swift earthquake at Lumen Field in Seattle: SoDo is built on landfill that was dumped into Elliott Bay's tidal flats, poor soil condotions that amplify ground motion (and prone to liquefaction in major quakes).

Taylor Swift-Quake: Fans Cause Seismic Activity at Seattle Concert

Seismometers can pick up many types of ground vibrations but this drew comparisons to the “Beast Quake” of 2011, when Seattle football fans roared in celebration of a last-minute Seahawks touchdown.

Richard Bangert shares his concerns about the location of the proposed clinic and veteran benefits facility at Alameda Point. Bangert describes the delicate location, "on an artificially constructed hill out on the old airfield in the middle of an earthquake liquefaction zone."

Industrial-scale magnetic cooling: In the project #HyLICAL, a team @HZDR, @TU and the start-up #MAGNOTHERM wants to improve hydrogen #liquefaction, building on #magnetocaloric materials that change their temperature when exposed to a magnetic field.

Industrial-scale magnetic cooling: Magnetocaloric effect for more efficient hydrogen liquefaction - Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, HZDR

Hydrogen will play a key role in the transformation towards a carbon-neutral society. By comparison with current usage, it is estimated that global hydrogen requirements will increase fivefold by 2050 to some 550 million tons. But in order to store hydrogen, enormous amounts of energy are needed. During liquefaction, approximately a third of the energy content of hydrogen is lost, which makes the process largely uneconomical. In the Horizon Europe project HyLICAL with a budget of some five million euros, a team including the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Darmstadt and the start-up MAGNOTHERM wants to significantly improve the technologies for storing liquid hydrogen. To this end, the team is building on magnetocaloric materials that change their temperature when they are exposed to a magnetic field.
