Developer Claims Photoshop Installers Now Work on Linux Using Wine

A developer has published a patched Wine build that reportedly allows Adobe Photoshop installers to complete on Linux.

A friend brought up an interesting point about how 'installing things on linux is hard', which I agree with.. if you're kinda Windows minded

There's a deep, ancient difference between Windows, Mac and Linux that people rarely seem to name, which also explains why Package Managers exist: DLL Hell. This explains the Windows SideBySide config, and Linux's Package Managers

To explain further, see the posts in the screenshots below (full alt text available):

Getting bored with Ubuntu (and annoyed by Snaps, lol). Which distro should I switch to?

Feel free to suggest something else, though I'm not really interested in going back to something super technical like Gentoo, Slackware, or a BSD variant.

I would prefer something that is user-friendly for everyday use, but customisable. Gaming and programming friendliness also desirable.

Helped someone switch to Kubuntu at our Linux User Group this week. The highlight? Her delight in learning “Kubuntu uses Firefox too!”

It’s a small thing, but it says so much about user expectations. Change feels safe when something familiar remains.

In open source, we talk a lot about freedom and features, but sometimes the real magic is showing that new doesn’t have to mean foreign. 🦊💻

In Norwegen übrigens schon >20% Marktanteil: https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/norway

Awesome Message!

I join the cause and am willing to help people who need help migrating to Linux.

Edit: as you can guess, I'm mostly using Fedora but can also help with Debian/Ubuntu/CentOS...

Here are links to the two articles I've written about this.

- https://dev.to/geraldew/ubuntu-linux-installation-to-a-usb-external-drive-with-efi-boot-46pj

They are aimed at the "tech capable friend" rather than directly to the end-user. Ideally I'd like some popular YouTube video makers to cover this method.

In a fantasy where I've won Lotto, I'd set up a service of providing these to people - ideally as a place people could drop-by with their laptop and watch one be made for them, and be shown how to boot on it.

Running Linux purely on a USB drive

a broad description of a method that would allow users to run full Linux with no changes to their existing computer

A note that if you want to help people move to using Linux, one *option* is to build them an independently running USB SSD.

I've documented a good method for doing this, which has two distinctions:
- it allows them to not modify their existing computer at all;
- it will be their *long term* portable Linux, that can be used with (most) other computers.

The one big caveat:
- for each run-time host computer, they will need to find out how to have it boot from USB.

I'm reading that Microsoft has announced support for Windows 10 is already ending in only a couple more months, which is making people understandably angry and some may be interested to try out #Linux. This is great! Linux thrives with more users and a diversity of experiences! Unfortunately, fedi has a bad reputation for being... unhelpful when it comes to folks asking "basic" tech questions, especially about Linux.

I'm certainly not the most knowledgeable or experienced, so I can't promise to be able to help directly with many questions, but I *do* promise to be patient and understanding to anyone experiencing some difficulty migrating away from Windows. Linux has been my main driver for regular computing for several years now and I even switched over for gaming a couple years ago, so feel free to reach out!

Hoping folks can reach people actually willing to help with some hashtags:

Is there a hashtag for folks to find people willing to patiently help with migrating to Linux? Maybe it would help with the whole "people on fedi are assholes to folks wanting help with the basics" issue...

Edit: "feud"? Really, autocorrect? Have I *ever* typed that word before???
