Linguistic relativity--the idea that language influences thought--has inspired hearty debate. It's clear that the language you speak does not determine thought, or prevent you from thinking certain thoughts. (That version of the theory has been debunked and can get racist fast.) However it's also clear that language plays an enormous role in culture, which does shape how we think about things. Now to the news:

Conference submission season is over!
This year I hope to present six communications on #CADS, #PoliticalDiscourse, #CorpusLinguistics, #NLP, #GenderStudies, and #Italianistics at #AESLA2025 in Palma de Mallorca (April), #CILC2025 (May) in Salamanca, where I host a panel, and #CL2025 at Aston University, Birmingham.
Looking forward to meet some #Linguistodons
Hi to fellow #linguistodons ! A brief #introduction. My name's Robin, I'm a teacher, translator and linguist, currently studying for an MA in Corpus Linguistics. My first degree was also in #linguistics, but that was a lo-o-o-o-o-ng time ago.
I'm fascinated by anything to do with language, and currently I'm learning Finnish and Ukrainian on #Duolingo for fun.
I may post #music and #nowplaying tweets, because music is my other passion.
Oh, and of course my #cat, Marmite.
