Hamilton‘s lost railways and mining.

We followed this morning's #plan, starting by going to #Neatishead #Staithe and buying #provisions and having a #coffee and #Norfolk #shortcake at the #community #shop.

The #dyke narrows considerably as you near the staithe but what amazed us was seeing a #Muntjac deer on the return down #Limekiln #dyke

The limekiln at Boddin Point in Angus, a little north of Lunan Bay. Dating back to the 1700s, it is ever more undercut by the sea and seems inevitably destined for collapse. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/montrose/boddinpoint/index.html

Remnants of an ancestral lime kiln. There is a collapsed pit in the background, and cedar trees are growing out of it. In the central area is a low vertical wall with a collapsed access hole, from which the slow-burning low-oxygen fire was fed. This kiln is beside a lake. I believe that limestone was quarried from a lake-side cliff, and dragged over the ice in the winter to the kiln. #Photography #Ontario #LimeKiln
Yesterday at #LimeKiln #StatePark on #SanJuanIsland. No whales, unfortunately, but a small pod of dolphins stopped by to frolic to our delight.

Home from a brief jaunt out into the wilds, with a cup of tea and a snack to test out a tiny alcohol hiking stove.

I really liked my kludged #Trangia safety valve and am so chuffed that it fits perfectly onto MSR fuel bottles.

Saw a ton of red-winged-blackbirds, and handful of bird watchers about. It was quiet on the greenbelt's #LimeKiln trail, in spite of a busy parking lot. Very pleasant indeed.
