Chris_SwanI didn't see any early spring flowers this morning on my walk to work along the canal but I did see these marvellous lichens on two fallen twigs. And there is a little moss too so this qualifies for the #Mosstodon tag and is #lichenodon a tag too?

John Faithfull 🌍🇪🇺🏴🧡✊🏻✊🏿Interesting to see 115 years of lichen growth: the same outcrop of metamorphic rock in Mull from a photo published in 1910, and from last year. Given that deglaciation was ca. sixteen-and-a-half thousand years ago, the early C20th outcrop was still remarkably free of lichen. Ruth Mottram@sellathechemist @jeppe it's a very nice project, I believe they have different science topics each year. They also say in the piece that they found a species of lichen that was thought to be extinct in Denmark, it only grows in undisturbed locations. We have a (crowdsourced) nature database in DK (naturbasen) where you can put your observations and I checked it out.

This is so cool! There is an annual mass #biodiversity experiment in Danish schools, which this year involved 30,000 kids collecting + examining samples of moss + lichen. Only 5% have been examined so far but they've already discovered 5 species of water bear unknown to science.
