While walking at Lake St Clair National Park, we saw masses of coral lichen just covering ground areas. Apparently, it thrives on ground where dead or dying buttongrass can be found.
We were disappointed to miss the buttongrass but thrilled to see so much lichen.
On a family trip to a wedding in Sonoma County California, I finally got to see something I have always wanted to see- the Redwood forests.
Since a child, I have always been fascinated with rainforests. This one collects its moisture from the fog rolling in off of the Pacific Ocean which provide water for an entire ecosystem below. The moss an mushrooms were in no short supply and there were numerous traces of fires from just 5 years ago.
These smaller fires actually help the redwood trees regrow and clear out the underbrush. The big trees have a bunch of fire resistant properties.
The immense, ancient trees make you feel tiny as you walk through the peaceful forest.
Yes I hugged a few giant trees and yes, we did stop for wine tasting- all delicious :)

In the city I didn't find much, only a slime mold, but went up the mountain and found all these cool lichen!
Took to very similar photos by accident of this amazing lichen. With the happy little accident that I now have a stereo-flicker gif.
edit: less efficient gif, but loops better. no idea why this is.
