@yora Look at Half-Life 2 - the cost of creating assets that fit the style is higher but still very much within reach of the community. I think the technology progressed so that we can have things looking nicer than Quake - closer to Half-Life 2 (albeit in different ways). In April I'm going to be doing a live presentation and workshop about my take on this on #LibreGraphicsMeeting. I do agree that we do need an open game to become a platform for creativity, but using FOSS for asset production.
Thanks to our powerful 3D asset pipeline and ubershader a simple model can provide a lot of visual variety. Edge bevels and wear, worn paint revealing raw metal underneath - these effects come easily and with little artist effort. Altering asset colors per instance is also possible. Reusing textures heavily for common effects removes the need to add bevels, wear & tear to your props. Model them pristine and let the framework do the rest!

Out of the Black and White: Unveiling the LGM 2026 Visual Identity

The black-and-white placeholder is gone. The new visual identity for LGM 2026 is live. We re:wired classical halftone printing into a real-time digital effect. The new design is built on custom WebGL2 shaders, algorithmic variable fonts, and animated screen angles.
