Summer Tanager. Bloomington West Park at Clinton Lake, Lawrence, Kansas, April 25th, 2026.

First time I've seen one, and it is/isn't surprising as to why. On the one hand, I'd've thought a bird as vibrantly red would've been easy to notice. On the other, I'm on the very edge of their range, so they probably aren't that common. Glad I found another bird just as majestic as the Cardinal!

When I had my quilt business, a few customers would ask for bird-themed quilts, mostly owls for some reason? But this one I made for me. It’s a modification of the Sew Fresh Quilts black bird pattern into #Jayhawks on the Kaw (the quilting on the blue background looks like flowing water)

I’m vacillating about whether to do this pattern again with corvids - it was a lot of fun to sew
