But here's the fascinating part:
It is a verb that means "one who goes up" or "rises."
Why "going up" for immigration to Israel?
Because according to the Talmud, "The Land of Israel is higher than all other lands" (Kiddushin 69a), and the Mishnah says "Everyone may ascend to the Land of Israel, but not everyone may take out" (Ketubot 13).
So immigrants to Israel are called עולים /o-'leem/ - those who ascend.
And those who leave Israel? They're called יורדים /yor-'deem/ - those who descend.
The language itself carries the value system - coming to Israel is literally "going up" in Hebrew.
And every wave of immigration is called עלייה (aliyah) /a-lee-'yah/ - an ascent.
That's why you'll hear about עלייה ראשונה (first aliyah), עלייה שנייה (second aliyah), and so on -
Each wave of immigration marked as an upward movement.
Hebrew doesn't just describe immigration - it elevates it.
