JukkaA bird walk on another grey day in Helsinki. I had low expectations, but it actually turned out alright.
Song thrushes have joined the choir in the woods. Yep, they are skilled singers – one of my favorites. I checked up on the local goshawk pair. The female had started incubating eggs, and I found the male nearby pruning its feathers. Suddenly it noticed a hooded crow flying overhead. The hawk stared at it with murderous intent for a moment and flew after the crow.
Then I walked to the coast and spotted a Eurasian wryneck in a grove. It is not a particularly rare bird in Finland, but I don't think I have ever seen it before. I hope it stays there so I can try taking a better photo. Finally a lesser spotted woodpecker surprised me by appearing right next to me while I was walking home. It did not mind me, the juicy grubs hiding in the bark were more interesting.

I have been somewhat disappointed with my recent photos, so I have not been interested in picking up my camera for a while. But today I showed those thoughts (and myself) the door and went for a walk. I'm glad I did! Look who I found almost immediately running back and forth on a path :) The white wagtail cheered me up quite a lot and I started to "see" photos again: buildings, birdwatchers, lesser spotted woodpeckers, common mergansers, fresh bird cherry leaves, bumblebee queens and so on.

PaulWorth getting up a little early for a walk in the woods - at least 3 male Pied Flycatcher, 1 Lesser Spotted Woodpecker but I think my favourite sighting was of a Tree Pipit singing and calling perched in a tree and then demonstrating the 'parachuting' display right over our heads.

BirdsinLatinA male #LesserSpottedWoodpecker (Females don't have red on their heads) is searching for some insects on a dead tree. Normally we have somewhere between 6 and 8 thousand couples in the Netherlands but during the Winter their number doubles due to migration.
So the chance of finding one to photograph is great at this moment.
