Just a Friday portrait of a lesser black-backed gull (and other snapshots of lesser black-backed gulls) I saw yesterday. Local birders sometimes say that this is the most Finnish bird in the world because most of the population of the nominate subspecies (larus fuscus fuscus) nest in Finland. They will soon head to the great lakes of East Africa for the winter.

Fortunately for me, not everyone leaves. Its bigger cousin with which it is sometimes confused – the great black-backed gull (who coined these names?) – should to start to appear in Helsinki more frequently as the autumn progresses. Can't wait to see more of those behemoths.
