“Don’t,” said Veronica harshly, then was instantly remorseful at the pain that crossed her maid’s face. “Don’t call me ‘miss’ when we are alone, when we are being like lovers.”

“What should I call you then?”

“Call me by my name.”

Polly hesitated as if the years of conditioning prevented her from uttering her mistress’s name. “Veronica?”

“No, that feels wrong, it’s too formal. It sounds like my mother or father. I need a nickname. I’ve never had one. Choose one for me.”

Polly pulled a face. “Von? Voni? Roni?”

Veronica laughed. “It makes me sound like a Prussian or just a man.” Though that might be interesting.

“Nika?”

“Yes! I will be Nika for you.”

Polly washed her then helped her dry before she went to see Josephine in Polly’s bedroom. Meanwhile Polly, under Vionnet’s insistence, emptied the bath and used fresh water for herself, with Ursula assisting.

Veronica was surprised to see her, she must have been so deep in her own thoughts she had not even noticed the girl arrive.

From now on, at least for today, Polly was no longer a maid, she was just Veronica’s bridesmaid—best friend and one true love.

Josephine jabbered while she trimmed Veronica’s nails, but Veronica barely listened. It was not that she was thinking about anything in particular, just that she was in an almost dreamlike state as she was tended on—literally hand and foot.

Then her nails were painted purple, and polished.

“They have to look their best,” said Josephine.
