A good year for Painted Ladies (Vanessa cardui) several having been spotted locally, having arrived with the heat waves to N Wales from southern climes. Gives me a thrill to welcome them 🥰

Happy birthday to #entomologist Margaret Fountaine (1862-1940), here in my #linocut with many #butterflies from her collection.

Her posthumous books featured her “wild and fearless life,” but she was also a trailblazing famous #Victorian #lepidopterist, published in The Entomologist’s Record and Journal of Variations, expert on tropical butterflies, discovering, documenting, breeding & gathering specimens 🧵

Most changes this week were from updating the Leucaniini for Europe and south-east Asia to match Hacker et al.'s 2002 treatment in volume 4 of Noctuidae Europaeae. All changes from that volume are now included. Working now to update the North American Leucaniini to match Pohl & Nanz 2023 (http://wedgefoundation.org/MONA2.asp).

So much to do to improve these lists - let me know if you are a #lepidopterist interested in helping.

It's worth noting that 73 of these 269 species (27% of the known world fauna) were named by the prodigiously active British #lepidopterist Edward Meyrick between 1885 and 1939 (the last of them in a posthumous publication):

Another 86 (32%) were named in the last 25 years. There are so many #Lepidoptera species being described each year globally.

I have just spent a lovely couple of hours researching Irish lepidopterists. I had already #Wikidata -ified Mrs F. W. Battersby https://wikidata.org/wiki/Q121904992 but got curious about Miss B. Donovan & Mrs C. Lucas. Siblings of the more famous Charles Donovan https://t.co/YZlx6TXPtm #Entomology #Lepidopterist

I’d love to know for sure what this extraterrestrial-like creature is. I think it’s either a white ermine or satin moth, but better lepidopterists than me might correct me. I took the poorer photo looking at the moth’s face and comb-like antennae yesterday - a difficult angle as it was sitting on the garage door. I took the other photo earlier of another example, sitting on the floor.
