Leopards in the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa are only about half the size of other African leopards. Whole-genome analysis identified about 90 genes that may be related to the size difference. Isolation of this population evidently occurred 20-24,000 years ago.

A rare, for me, photo from South Africa. I usually spend my Africa time in Botswana. But for a few days back in 2017, I was just outside Kruger National Park.

This lovely lady looks calm and commanding atop her termite mound, but she was actually quite annoyed by a hyena that had been hounding her for miles. She had climbed up there just to try and get some space.
