Legacy Update 1.13

Legacy Update

@kirb I'd imagine people have been reporting this for awhile, but #LegacyUpdate setup seems broken on Win2k. I get an error message saying "Failed to register Legacy Update ActiveX control: Access is denied." near the end of the install. Happens on a fresh Win2k SP4 installation, both with VMs and real machines.

Any known workaround?

The Register: Legacy Update expands archive of vanished Microsoft downloads. “Legacy Update has for years been a tremendously useful site and tool for those wanting to keep older versions of Windows alive and in active use. The site has updated its archive of files that Microsoft used to make available for free download in the official Download Center, but has in its finite wisdom removed.”

I've not used this tool personally, but I know it's been around for a long time.

If you have an older PC you can't (or don't want) to upgrade to Windows 11, this could provide a safe way to keep using that old OS — as far back as Windows XP! #LegacyUpdate https://www.theregister.com/2025/09/29/legacy_updated_updated/

Legacy Update updated – so your old Windows can be, too

: Need – or prefer – an EOL version of Windows? Don't panic!

The Register

I think I've found an edge case in #legacyupdate

It can't install Windows Vista SP1. I'm using an SP0 RTM install media, but it's completely failing to progress past this screen (it's been running for 12 hours)

(Replicated in VM *and* Hardware)

My project today was reinstalling #WindowsXP on one of my old laptops. Awhile back I installed WinXP on it from a modded image that had updates and drivers baked in. Unfortunately it had a bunch of other cruft on it too, and it was causing some problems, so I decided to try a pristine disc.

At first I couldn't get the installer to recognize my SSD. The modded disc had a built-in driver for the laptop's ICH8M SATA controller, but the official disc predated it by a few years. The WinXP installer only allows you to load add-on storage drivers from a floppy drive, which the laptop doesn't have, so I ended up having to go into the BIOS and set the SATA controller to compatibility mode. Install went fine after that.

I tried @[email protected] 's #LegacyUpdate to get updates installed. The first time I set it to get all the extra updates from the embedded edition, but that broke Windows Installer and the ATI control panel. Reinstalled from scratch again and this time set it to only download standard updates. Everything's good now.
