Enfin fini les découpes ! C’est pas glorieux mais je sais au moins sur quoi bosser par la suite.

Plus qu’à coudre !

I am working on a creating a series of small tool holsters that fit on a belt. This is something I am asked for often. Everyone carries different small tools so I am trying to come up with something generic. The good thing about veg tanned leather is, over time the pockets will adapt to what one is carrying in them so if you carry a jackknife and flashlight the pockets will eventually mold to those shapes and it will look as though it were designed to carry those items. This is my first prototype. #leather #LeatherCraft #Maker #tools #holster

Here is my rendition of a Kephart belt bag. I read up on Horace Kephart and decided to keep this as basic as possible, without any fancy hardware or decoration. I rely on the form and contrast in colours to speak for themselves. The only ornament is the stamped leather button that holds the pack closed. #leather #LeatherCraft #Maker #HandMade #HandStitched #BeltBag #Bag #HoraceKephart

One byproduct of making things by hand, especially when the task has become part of my muscle memory, is there's a lot of time to think. I wonder how long there will be people who understand how things are properly constructed and in what order? There are thousands of Internet videos showing how to glue and rivet stuff together to make things that look cool but won't last. I'd hate for the industrial knowledge to be lost for the sake of ease or convenience. #LeatherCraft #HandMade
Another work day ending in the morning but the protype version of the Kephart bag is a success. Now I'll reproduce one for sale, keeping track of the labor time to decide whether this is something worth reproducing more than once. I think this is the second pattern I've produced recently where everything fit as it should and looked correct. I love seeing my skill grow. #leather #LeatherCraft #msker #design
I go vintage shopping weekly and it turns out some guy has seen me shopping and admired my leather shopping tote. This week he spoke to me and it turns out he is enthusiastic about all things leather. He told me about Horace Kephart who was a naturalist and writer about the great outdoors. This fellow was particularly interested in some of Kephart's gear, including a bag he used to wear on his belt. Once home, I researched all this and can't help noticing, what Mr. Kephart carried on his belt was a sporran. I often say, it's all been done before. All we do now as leather artists is put our own spin on it.
Anyhow, here is one of my sporrans. This one has a dragon carved into the top.

Here is a repair we completed recently. This chair sits in the lobby of a local restaurant. A child grasped onto a tear in the leather and tore a chunk out of arm. The chunk of leather vanished. (Perhaps a parent hiding evidence?) We had to create our own patch, fill around the edges of the tear and do our best to colour match the rest of the arm to help the hole disappear.
The customer said, "I can't even see where the damage was."
That is precisely the point.
