Something has happened to fresh leafy greens in Perth.
Twice this week, the steamed greens have tasted so salty that I've thrown them out.
One lot was purchased silver beet - leaves looked cloudy, not a shiney green.
Other lot was from my garden, some S.E. Asian long white stemmed bok choy-ey-sort -thing-? - big leaves, also not shiney.
Checked some purchased kale - chewed uncooked this morning - wasn't sure, could have been too salty too. Didn't use.

Cold Climate Gardening Tips for #Maine’s Short Growing Season

By Jessica Knowles, February 3, 2025

Excerpt: "Cool-season crops are a great choice because they can withstand lower temperatures and often mature quickly. #LeafyGreens like #spinach, #kale, and #lettuce not only grow well but can also be harvested multiple times throughout the season, making them highly productive. Root vegetables such as #carrots, #radishes, and #beets thrive in Maine’s rocky soil when it’s properly amended with compost. Brassicas, including #broccoli, #cabbage, and #cauliflower, are particularly hardy and perform exceptionally well when planted early in the season."

At last, Spring

…And when we got back from ‘messing about in boats’ to plant #LeafyGreens from that sweet little nursery we found along the way, we saw it. The first of the small #SpringStar #BlueFlower bulbs had burst into bloom. We settled in, admiring its ethereal #blues with a nice cup of tea, happy to be home.
