You can hear why Page chose to play banjo on Led Zeppelin’s cover of Lead Belly’s song “Gallis Pole” (Gallows Pole). The original features lively staccato 12-string finger-picking.

On Jan 20, 1888: #LeadBelly, American blues 12 string guitarist (Rock Island Line), born in Mooringsport, Louisiana (d. 1949).
#HappyBirthday #RIP 🥀

Today in Labor History January 20, 1888: American blues musician and songwriter, Lead Belly, was born. Lead Belly usually played a twelve-string guitar, but he also played the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin and windjammer. He served several prison terms between 1915 and 1939. Folklorists John Lomax, and his son Alan Lomax, recorded him in prison in 1933 and 1934 for the Library of Congress. After prison, the Lomax’s briefly managed his musical career. But when Allan decided he could no longer work with Lead Belly, he refused to pay him the full amount he was owed, claiming it was better to send it to him installments so he would drink it all up at once. Lead Belly successfully sued for the full amount. In 1936, he was performing two shows daily at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre. In 1937, Life magazine ran a 3-page article titled "Lead Belly: Bad N-----r Makes Good Minstrel," with a full color photograph of him. In 1949, he had a regular radio show “Folk Songs of America,” on WNYC in New York. Later that year, he started developing symptoms of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and soon died. Over his career, Lead Belly recorded numerous songs about work, poverty, prison, racism and discrimination, such as “Bourgeois Blues,” “The Gallis Pole,” “Take This Hammer,” “John Henry,” and “The Red Cross Store Blues.” He also wrote antifascist songs like “Mr. Hitler.”
