Remember the lawyer who relied on ChatGPT-imagined cases? (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/08/nyregion/lawyer-chatgpt-sanctions.html)

Here is an earlier example from Canada (a self-represented litigant before the Ontario Labour Relations Board): https://canlii.ca/t/jxb3t

Risks abound for self-reps just trying to find their way.

Interesting #BCCA decision yesterday.

Defence counsel rejects Crown's proposed 45-day joint sentencing submission, hoping for a conditional discharge despite the judge's warning that even 45 days might be inadequate. At sentencing, w/ no joint submission before him, the judge imposed 6 months' imprisonment.

Appeal allowed--defence should've known that 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘺-𝘊𝘰𝘰𝘬 may have tied the judge's hands, so it was #IneffectiveAssistance to reject Crown's proposal!

- they didn't blow it away from the bench. They took 2 weeks! Still fast, no harm done, but so much more quality control possible!
- they block quoted the reasons below that they agreed with, they didn't just say "substantially for the reasons of"!! This is great, makes their holdings much easier to find on #CanLII

Also it was unanimous (Côté J wasn't on the panel) and the taxman won! What's not to love?
