Amazon and major brands donate 200,000 hygiene essentials to Swansea Multibank

The products — including toothpaste, soap, deodorant and laundry detergent from names such as Colgate, Johnson & Johnson, Neutrogena, Sanex and Palmolive — will be channelled through the Swansea‑based Multibank, run by charity Faith in Families, to support households struggling with the cost of living.

Local distribution from Swansea

The donations are being coordinated with support from Amazon’s Swansea Bay fulfilment centre, which is working with supplier partners to deliver the items. Families referred to the Cwtch Mawr Multibank will receive the products free of charge.

Research commissioned earlier this year found that nearly one in four adults in Wales worry about paying for basic hygiene products, while 14% have already cut back or gone without.

What it means for families

Cherrie Bija, Chief Executive of Faith in Families, said:

“We work with organisations supporting some of the most vulnerable people who find themselves in desperate need, often through no fault of their own. The products we receive through the Multibank and Amazon partnership make a huge difference — whether that’s having toothpaste to clean children’s teeth or blankets to stay warm.”

National network, local impact

The Cwtch Mawr Multibank is part of a UK‑wide network co‑founded by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Amazon. Since 2022, Multibanks have provided more than 12 million essential items to over 800,000 families nationwide.

The current campaign runs until 12 November, with every two qualifying products purchased on Amazon.co.uk triggering a third item donated to the Multibank at no extra cost to customers.

Amazon’s view

Eugenie Teasley, Head of Impact at Amazon UK, said:

“As winter draws closer and families face increasingly difficult times, we wanted to team up once again with our partners in support of The Multibank in Wales and across the UK. The You buy. We donate campaign offers Amazon customers the opportunity to make a huge difference to the lives of families in need while buying their everyday essential items.”

Choice has found that generally, ordinary powder laundry detergents perform better than capsules etc, but beware of 'green' alternatives:

"Detergents sold on their sustainability credentials performed poorly on Choice’s tests, something Serrels said is disappointing. He also cautioned consumers to be sceptical of some green claims. “Sometimes they say they’re green and they’re not that green,” he said. Factchecking green claims can be complicated, which Serrels said, “speaks to a broader issue around all this stuff – we’re making consumers responsible for these issues”."

Caveats with #TeaTree -- make sure it's fresh! It turns into a turpentine-like substance if too old. Also, some folks with sensitive skin should avoid Tea Tree, and don't use it for items for your pets (especially cats!)

Make Your Own #LaundryDetergent with Tea Tree + Rosemary

by Lindsey Johnson, January 18, 2018

"The tea tree [and rosemary] has antimicrobial properties, which is nice for laundry, and both the essential oils help cut the strong scent of the soaps. For a completely natural laundry soap, use grated vegetable oil based soap, like Dr. Bronner's castile bars."

Lavendar: The Choice For Aromatic Laundry | Lavender Tips

I've made this with leftover soap scraps (we sometimes make our own soap). If one buys soap wrapped in paper (or make their own), the borax and washing soda come in cardboard boxes -- no plastic involved! As for essentials oils, one could make a lavender or rosemary "tea" using dried leaves (and be careful using EOs if you have cats). Also, I use lemon juice and apple cider vinegar in the final rinse, which helps remove soap residue and softens clothes.

How to Make Your Own #LaundryDetergent

It’s cheap, easy, and quick. Did we mention cheap? (And doesn't involve plastic containers! Though one could store the home-made detergent in old containers, which is what I do)

by Sandra Gutierrez G.

Everyone wears clothes, everybody’s clothes get dirty, and even though you hate it, everyone needs to do laundry. And unless you’re fortunate enough to have a washer and dryer at home, washing your clothes may be more than annoying—it can also be expensive.

If this is your situation, or you simply enjoy making things from scratch—because why not—you can try making your own laundry detergent. Just as effective with your dirty socks as whatever you buy in stores, it is not only easy to make and incredibly cheap, but can also be hypoallergenic, custom-scented, and environmentally friendly.

It’s important to note that you’ll need a lot of containers for the finished product. DIY laundry detergent is a go-big-or-go-home kind of deal, yielding up to 2 gallons per batch. You said you wanted some savings, right?

What You’ll Need

Ingredients

- ½ cup borax
- 1 bar of soap
- ½ cup sodium carbonate (washing soda, a stronger version of baking soda)
- 2 gallons of water
- 1 ounce of essential oils (optional)

Tools
- Large bucket (must hold more than 2 gallons)

Preparation time
- About 20 minutes (plus 24 hours of resting)
