Antoinette Lattouf chats with Jan Fran about the case against the ABC on a new podcast called "we used to be journos"
Truth to Power.
Another great episode from The Sunday Shot. This is sooooooo much better than watching Insiders and getting triggered by the inanity of it all.
"Doug Cameron and Josh Bornstein don't hold back with their incisive commentary on the way Labor, the ABC and other institutions are failing us at this critical moment. A cracker conversation."
We will never know the names of the odious, capricious monsters who bullied #Lattouf for the same reasons we will never see the names of the odious, capricious monsters in the sealed section of the #Robodebt RC.
Even though the reason for sealing that section, criminal prosecution, did not happen.
Rich, powerful, well connected. That's how the system works in #Australia
The Lattouf unfair dismissal case is another reminder we live in a society where access to justice for the average punter is a long, costly, public, damaging and tedious process, full of risk, esp if you have been wronged by the powerful. It changes you.
The powerful? Those moral vacuums engaged in bad-faith harassment, offended at factually accurate reporting about another country?
Why, they are gifted privacy, of course, by a system that applies different standards to the rich and connected. And there will be no consequences for ABC management, naturally.
Federal court ruling: ABC loses; Lattouf vindicated.
After a 14 month legal battle over a 5 day contract, an Australian federal judge has ruled that #ABC executives were put into a "state of panic" by a coordinated campaign of complaints from the pro-Israel lobby (& Murdoch press) against Lebanese-Australian journalist Antoinette Lattouf, leading them to unlawfully fire #Lattouf on the basis of her political opinions about Israeli military actions in Gaza.
This is such an important ruling. This is the highest Oz authority thus far to affirm some basic truths: that criticism of Israel's crimes is not antisemitic, that doing so is protected political speech, that firing someone for such speech is unlawful under the Fair Work Act, & that fear of being labelled #antisemitic by the pro-Israel lobby is a real reason why officials might be willing to collude in breaking this law. All basic standards - yet no Australian government (federal or state) has been willing to make any of these points on the record with such clarity for at least 20 months.
Now other employers who fired/disciplined employees over this matter may need to rapidly make amends.
