The service guy was too quick for us to specify we were in for a melt and shrugged us off when we tried to correct.

A trip to B & H, the iconic lunch counter on 2nd in the East Village, has been in our plans long enough. It’s hard to get into this tiny streetcar shaped luncheonette during the usual food hours — they are always packed. For the first time, we were walking by during the off hours.

Oh, well — we’ll come back for our melt. The salad itself was divine and we got to watch some lucky guy’s melt heating up in front of us.

Latkes were super crisp. A bit too crisp, maybe? And fried sauerkraut mushrooms pierogi were packed with the tasty filling. Really really good solid Eastern European comfort food.

For the next time, we eyed the soups — the girl next to us was so dreamily dipping her latke into the bowl of steaming boiled lentils I swallowed and almost asked for a taste.
