hi internet critters of varying gayness. anyone here who could recommend me grease and oil for a Hobbymat MD65 lathe (=Proxxon SD300)? we have one at my local hacker- and makerspace which has definitively seen better times (see picture) and i want to get it back in working order. however, the manual basically says "use good oil and grease" and i have no clue what the requirements are. looking around on the webs it tells me some complicated stuff and i am confused :(

Forged In FreeCAD: The Modulathe V2
In an amusing twist, this Forged in FreeCAD story will contain similar words to the last Forged In FreeCAD story, most notably, “concrete” and “lathe”!
The Modulathe has a couple of design version with V2 being a pretty fully featured desktop metal cutting lathe. The Modulathe V2 can be built for manual operation but is also #CNC ready. #lathe #machining #cad #cam #opensource

Getting some quality time with the #lathe today. After nearly a century of use and abuse the Morse taper on the tailstock quill is only vaguely Morse taper shaped, so I'm gingerly reaming it out. Didn't have a dead center for the chuck, so first I had to turn one.

Wordle 30 October 2025: A Crafty Spin with “LATHE”

Today’s Wordle was all about precision! The five-letter puzzle started with “L” and had no repeating letters. With two vowels and a clue pointing to a machine used to shape wood or metal, players eventually carved out the perfect answer LATHE. Simple, smooth, and satisfying a true Wordle classic.

New Turnings for Percy

It’s been over a year since the lathe last graced the workbench in the heavy shop. Honestly, I was surprised I remembered how to turn it on! It took only one attempt to make this brass bearing, and two attempts for the new insulated axle. I’ll take the win!

So the #Lathe and #Mill are not completely set up. And both need attention cleaning them, but I've finally got them roughly where they are going to live. And we have more space where both of them lived, and in the working space of them.

Both Lathe and Mill start as Sherline lathes. One branded Craftsman, but still. One lathe came with the mill pillar, but since it has a drive to move the cross slide, I think I'm going to put the mill pillar on the Craftsman.\

I have been unsuccessful in removing the spindle from my lathe despite application of tremendous violence. I'm going to have to work out some other way of getting some grease into the forward roller bearing.

I belted on that piece of wood extremely hard and nothing moved at all.

I asked a friend over to help me lift the lathe onto the shed bench. We tried and couldn't lift it high enough. We needed more space to be able to put it on a half way height to change grip, and there just wasn't the space to do it. 135+kg beat us and so it was decided to abandon the lift until another time when I could rethink it. He left, and Sue went off to bake.

So, with the Pet Shop Boys playing in my head....
🎶 Left to my own devices, I probably would. 🎶

I got the lathe on the bench alone. Sometimes it is just better for me to be 'left to my own devices' to sort out a problem.

I clamped a 4" square post to the side of the bench, and then clamped a 4x2 to the door frame.
Two 4x2s were screwed into the top of the posts to make a 4x4 beam, and then a 1/2 ton chain hoist was used to lift the lathe up and swing it onto the bench.
I then put it on a couple of short 4x2s to spread the weight across the MDF bench top.

We have unloaded the lathe from Bugsy.

I made a crane jib from two 3m lengths of Unistrut, inserted together to make them a bit stronger. They were anchored to the trailer side with a G cramp, and suspended from a lifting chain off the ladder rack.
One winch was used to pre-tension the jib by running a cable end to end and over the ladder rack.
A second winch was used to provide the hoisting.

Once lifted, the car was moved forward, and then the lathe was lowered onto a sack barrow.

An old trailer draw bar provided extra leverage for lifting and moving the barrow into the shed.

I now need to work out lifting it onto the shed workbench.

I was horrified, after I took a #macro #photography and saw that my "clean" finger was filled with metal #swarf #particles imbedded in the #fingerprint after 3 hours of just teaching in a #machineshop that day.
